Main Verse:"Be still, and know that I am God."— Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Devotional:
In the noise and busyness of life, listening can feel like a lost art—especially when listening to God. We often bring our needs, hopes, and fears to Him in prayer, pouring out our hearts, which is important. But how often do we stop and listen?
Listening to God requires us to be still, quiet our minds, and open our hearts to His voice. This is not easy in a world filled with distractions. Yet, God’s voice is not typically found in the whirlwind of life. Instead, He speaks gently, like the “still, small voice” that Elijah encountered in 1 Kings 19:12. God’s words of guidance, comfort, and wisdom often come in moments of silence, but we must first position ourselves to hear.
One of the most significant examples of listening to God is found in the story of young Samuel. God called to him as he lay in the temple, but it was not until Samuel quieted himself and said, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10) that he received God’s message. Like Samuel, we must cultivate a posture of readiness, open to whatever God has to say.
How do we develop this art of listening? Start by setting aside time daily to quiet your heart before God. Turn off the external and internal noise and ask Him to speak to you through His Word, prayer, or even through the nudges of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, listening involves waiting without receiving an immediate answer but trusting that God is always present and always speaking. His words may come through scripture, through the counsel of others, or through the peace that fills your heart in moments of stillness.
In a culture that values action, listening to God may seem passive, but it is one of the most powerful things we can do. Listening helps us discern His will for our lives, find peace in His presence, and discover the deep truths of His love.
Supporting Verses:
“Whether you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” — Isaiah 30:21
“Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
Prayer: Lord, help me to develop the art of listening to Your voice. During my busy life, teach me to be still and to trust that You are speaking. Open my ears and heart to hear Your words, whether through scripture, a gentle whisper, or a peace that passes understanding. May I follow Your voice above all others, trusting that You guide my every step. Amen.
Reflection Question: When was the last time you truly took the time to listen to God? What changes can you make to create space for His voice in your daily life?
